Klingen Brass Instruments Photo
M J KALASHEN NEW YORK SERIAL #148
from C 1900. Michael J Kalashen built and imported instruments from about 1890 to 1930 in New York City.
Charles Roth of Strassbourg
made about 1860 – 1870.
The horn is totally original, without damage of any kind and with normal modern (not ascending third valve) configuration.
Bell diameter is 11 3/8 inches (290 mm).
Nine original crooks plus a B-flat coupler.
There’s evidence that the horn has been played very little, the original brass pistons are still tight.
There are no patches and the bell wears a wide garland on the flare.
The body of the horn is stamped “Ch. Roth / a Strassbourg / brevete / S.G.D.G.” Germany gained control of Strassbourg / Strassburg in 1870 and it became illegal to use the French language in business and financial dealings. The French spelling is evidence, we believe, that the horn was built before 1870.

The MAHILLON Company was established in 1836
by Charles Borromée MAHILLON.
Since the middle of the XIXth cy, it was the most important
& the most famous Brass Instrument Factory in Belbium.
Victor Charles Mahillon (1841-1924)
established definitely the fame of this firm.
He was a remarkable acoustician well known all over the world
and he made a revolution in the manufacturing of the brass instruments.
He published then some reknowed books about the acoustic.
Some times after Victor Charles Mahillon died,
the Company was taken over by Jean Adrien SMITS.
The model of French Horn we are presenting
has the model number 499 as per the 1937 Catalogue.
It it the best issue model of a French Horn created and improved continually
by Charles Mahillon himself - by the end of the XIXth cy.
As it was the case for the Raoux Milleau,
it has been manufactured up to the first part of the XXth century.
*
This instrument is quite unique regarding its acoustic conception
as decided by Charles Mahillon.
The crooks are unique in their structure as the leadpipe has a very narrow bore
which can accept only the Mahillon Mouthpieces
and as well than the very rare Guilbaut rayée Mouthpiece -
and exceptionnaly we supply this infindable one with the instrument.
It is necessary to have the original crooks
and the special mouthpiece fitting especially to this Instrument
in order to respect the wanted research elaborated by Mahillon himself
giving the so special sound of the Franco-Belge French horns School.
*
Excepted a very tiny dent -scarcely visible on the very brim of the bell
and one or two pencil dings,
this instrument is in an outstanding shape with a 100% SILVER coat.
Its two crooks are as well in an excellent condition.
*
The pistons valves are in a perfect shape
with an excellent compression and function easily.
*
The sound is quite clear, bright, lighthful,
quite precise with an immediat response
with a great homogeneity on the whole tessitura.
The sound is quite faithful to the Franco-Belge School of that period.
*
It is written on the bell
within a wonderful engraved floral design :
